2010 LOCAL SPECIAL AWARDS

 

In addition to being able to win a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal, students are eligible to win many different local special awards. Here are some of the awards that were available at the 2010 fair.

 

Al-Hijra School Environmental Sciences Award

A medallion and $50 prize will be awarded to the best Novice, Junior and Intermediate projects that demonstrate excellence in environmental conservation, preservation or regeneration. Partners must split the prize Special consideration will be given to projects relating to natural bodies of water or water systems. Sponsored by Al-Hijra School.

 

Automotive Pinnacle Award

This bursary award and medal acknowledges outstanding achievements in automotive innovation. Two awards will be awarded in the amounts of $100 each. Partners must split the prize. Pending qualified projects from the intermediate and senior categories, eligibility for this award must follow automotive innovation criteria. An innovation involves the development and evaluation of new devices, models, techniques or approaches as related to the automotive industry. In addition, they demonstrate how the innovation was designed or developed on the basis of a sound understanding of the scientific, engineering or technological principles but enhanced uniquely. Grades 7-12 are eligible Sponsored by Faculty of Engineering, University of Windsor.

 

Brighton Beach Awards Of Merit

A unique and highly regarded award which serves to award projects in any category or age group which demonstrates special effort and motivation. A certificate and a special prize will be awarded to 30 enthusiastic students. Sponsored by Brighton Beach Power.

 

Brighton Beach Academic Excellence Awards

In recognition of their achievements, all gold medal winners at the fair will receive a $25 gift certificate. Silver medal winners will receive a $10 gift certificate. Sponsored by Brighton Beach Power.

 

Canada Wide Science Fair

Five students will be chosen to represent the Windsor Regional Science, Technology and Engineering Fair at the Canada Wide Science Fair. Sponsored by WRSTEF.

 

Consulting Engineers Award

The best overall project in engineering and technology will be awarded a plaque and $100 award. Partners must split the prize. Sponsored by Essex Kent Chapter of the Consulting Engineers of Ontario.

 

CSDECSO French Project Awards

The top novice and junior french projects will each receive $100 award, with another $100 cheque going to the teacher advisor for the project. Partners must split the prize. Sponsored by Conseil Scolaire de District des Ecoles Catholiques du Sud-Ouest..

 

Energy Conservation Award

Medals and a prize will be presented to the best Junior, Intermediate and Senior project related to conservation of energy. Sponsored by the Windsor Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers, (ASHRAE)

 

Engineering Award

A plaque and $100 prize will be presented to the best Junior, Intermediate and Senior project related to Engineering and/or Applied Science. Partners must split the prize. Sponsored by the Windsor- Essex Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario.

 

EnviroExpo Special Award

The EnviroExpo Special Award challenges youth to take on a pressing environmental issue and the combined skills of art and science to attack it. In addition to traditional scientific content, projects must incorporate an artistic discipline and fall into one of the seven areas of environmental focus: Renewable Energy, Sustainable Development, Resource Management, Environmental Influences on Health, Culture, Society and the Environment, the Greening of Products and Services or Biodiversity. This award is open to all students, grades 7-12 and is worth $100.00. Sponsored by VIA Rail.

 

Environmental Innovator Award

This award will contribute $100 and a certificate to an outstanding project in any category which demonstrates a creative approach to an environmental problem that could lead to cleaner air, land or water. Partners to split bursary. Money will be given directly from YSO. Sponsored by Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

 

Essex Animal Hospital Award For Excellence

This is an award for excellence at the Novice Level. A $20 prize, medal and a science book will be given to honour the top science projects in Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6. Sponsored by Dr. Janice Huntingford, DVM, Essex Animal Hospital.

 

Essex Region Conservation Authority Award

Projects related to either the conservation of soil, wildlife, forests, or flood and erosion protection in all divisions will be considered. Eight framed certificates and a Family Conservation Season Pass will be presented to the winning projects. (1 or 2 students per project). Sponsored by Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA).

 

Excellence In High School Participation Bursaries

These bursaries will be awarded to the Science department head of the representative high school for each medal winning project at the regional fair. Gold medals will be awarded $100, silver $50, bronze $25. Money is to be used towards improvement of education in science. Sponsored by Windsor Regional Science, Technology and Engineering Fair.

 

Faculty of Engineering Entrance Award

This award provides a $500 tuition entrance award to a winner in grade 11 or 12, who then pursues a degree in engineering at the University of Windsor. Sponsored by Faculty of Engineering, University of Windsor.

 

Golder Associates Award

A certificate and $100 award will be presented to two engineering projects that best exemplify the following categories. One award will be for an “environmental” project(focused on improving the environment and providing benefits to human health in developing countries) with the other award being for a “geotechnical” project (focused on earth engineering and development). Partner projects will have to share the award. Sponsored by Golder Associates Ltd.

 

Greater Essex County District School Board Prize

This prize will contribute $2,000 towards the travel expenses and cost of sending one of the top science fair project winners from the Public School Board to the Canada Wide Science Fair this May. All categories will be considered. Sponsored by Greater Essex County District School Board.

 

Greater Windsor Horticultural Society Award

Medals and a gift certificate will be given to the students in the Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories showing excellence in the horticultural field of study Sponsored by Greater Windsor Horticultural Society.

 

Hydro One Energy Ambassador Award

This $100 bursary and certificate is awarded to a project of outstanding scientific quality whose primary focus is the distribution, supply management, use or conservation of electrical energy. Money will be given directly from YSO. Sponsored by Hydro One Networks Inc.

 

Mad Science Award -- Why MY teacher is Great!

All students (grades 3 to 6) at WRSTEF will receive a complimentary Mad science presentation while at the fair. In addition Mad Science will sponsor a draw for eight MAD Science T-shirts for those students that state “Why my Teacher is Great!” Sponsored by Mad Science.

 

NSERC University Of Windsor Promotion Of Science Awards

This $1,000 bursary celebrates both science and engineering achievement. This money will split to recognize extraordinary achievement in the disciplines of life sciences, physical and mathematical science, and engineering. The prize money will be divided between the top female in engineering ($200), the top student in the life sciences category ($200), top student in physical and mathematical science and engineering ($200). This prize will also contribute $200 towards the travel expenses and cost of sending one of the top science fair project winners to the Canada Wide Science Fair. An additional $200 will be given to the top performing high school for the purchase of scientific equipment Sponsored by Dr. Ranjana Bird, Vice- President Research, on behalf of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).

 

Nipissing University Admission Award

Nipissing will offer a $1000 admission award to the senior project that is considered to be most deserving by WRSTEF. In the case of two student project, each student will receive a $500 admission award. Student(s) will receive a certificate from Nipissing of their award, after contact information has been obtained from the WRSTEF representative.

 

Ontario Association Of Medical Laboratories Award

A $100 award bursary will be presented to the student(s) with the top laboratory science project. The top intermediate and top senior division project will be considered primarily. Junior level projects may also be considered. Projects designed to improve our understanding of topics such as Bacteriology, Biochemistry, Genomics, Laboratory Methods, Hematology, Microbiology, Diseases and the like will be considered. Money will be given directly from Sci-Tec. Sponsored by YSO and Pfizer Canada Inc.

 

Powering the Future - Electricity for the Next Generation Award

This award will present medals and a $50 prize to the best Junior, Intermediate and Senior projects related to conservation, and production of electrical energy. Sponsored by Brighton Beach Power.

 

Promising Young Engineer Award

This prize and medal acknowledges outstanding early experimental achievements by a student. The exhibitor’s work shows great potential for future application or continuation of their experiment. $100 will be given to the exhibitor and $50 to their teacher advisor who must use the bursary in the promotion of future Science Fair student participation. Grades 7-12 are eligible. Sponsored by U of W Faculty of Engineering.

 

Riverside Sertoma Award

This $50 gift certificate and medallions recognizes the top 2 projects which relate to speech, hearing or language disorders. Any project that helps identify, quantify or helps others to better understand hearing loss, speech or language disorders. Sponsored by Riverside SERvice TO Mankind Club.

 

Science City Membership Draw

This award consists of a 1 year membership to Windsor’s Science Centre, Canada South Science City located at 930 Marion Ave. This membership also includes free entry to affiliated science centres in Ontario. Winners will be determined by draw with two memberships selected from Novice through Junior exhibitors and one membership selected from the Intermediate through Senior exhibitors. Sponsored by Canada South Science City.

 

Stantec Consulting Award

Projects shall be related to application of engineering principles or research for improving the quality of our environment and/or infrastructures. A plaque and $100 prize will be awarded to the best Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior projects. Sponsored by Stantec Consulting Ltd.

 

St. Clair College: Excellence in Innovation and Technology Awards

Ten students demonstrating outstanding motivation and verbal communication skills in the area of innovation and technology will receive a special prize and gift certificate. Grades 7 – 12 will be considered. Sponsored by St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology.

 

St. Clair College: Excellence in Technology Awards

An engraved plaque will be presented to the top Junior, Intermediate and Senior project which demonstrates the best execution of innovative thinking in a technology application. Sponsored by St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology

 

Technology Award

This project should be related to engineering technology, tool and mold making and / or applied sciences. A medal and $50 prize will be presented to the best projects in Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories. Sponsored by Facca Incorporated.

 

Top Backboard Awards, Grades 3-6

These prizes acknowledge excellence in science backboards to convey project information in the Novice division. In grade 3 and 4, the winner will receive a family pass to the Famous Players Theatre. Sponsored by WRSTEF. In grade 5 and 6, the award consists of four one-week free passes to the Campus for Kids Summer Program. Sponsored by Campus for Kids - St. Clair College Athletics and Recreation Department.

 

Top Participating Elementary School

This award celebrates the involvement and encouragement provided by the teacher and school in supporting student participation and encouraging excellence in grades 3-6. The top five participating elementary schools will be entered in a draw to receive a plaque and Mad Science Presentation for their school. A minimum 250 student population applies for each school attending the Fair. The teacher contact will choose the date of the school presentation by contacting Mad Science, Windsor. Sponsored by WRSTEF.

 

Top Participating Secondary School

This award consists of a plaque and a $100 bursary to be given to the top participating secondary school based on a per capita basis. The $100 is to be used to purchase science equipment for the school. Sponsored by WRSTEF.

 

University Of Ontario Institute Of Technology Award

Two $100 award bursaries and certificates are presented to two projects which best demonstrate the most innovative development, adaptation or use of technology. All science categories considered, 1 project must be Gr. 7/8 (junior). Money will be given directly from Sci-Tec. Sponsored by UOIT.

 

University of Windsor Admission scholarship

The University of Windsor seeks to acknowledge the best Gold Medal awarded senior project from WRSTEF. This scholarship will be applied to the tuition fees when the student/s is/are registered in an undergraduate Science or Engineering program at the University of Windsor. In the case of a partner project, each student would receive $1000. Sponsored by UWindsor.

 

University Of Ottawa Admission Scholarship

The Faculties of Engineering, Science and Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa seeks to acknowledge the most deserving senior project from each region. This scholarship will be applied to the tuition fees when the student(s) registers in an undergraduate program in one of the afore mentioned faculties. In the case of a partner project, each student would receive a $500 admission scholarship. Sponsored by The Faculties of Engineering, Science and Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa.

 

University Of Windsor Department Of Earth Sciences Prize

This award consists of a $70 prize and medal to acknowledge the best project related to Earth Science in the intermediate and senior project categories. Partners must split prize. Sponsored by Department of Earth Sciences, University of Windsor.

 

University Of Windsor Faculty Of Education Excellence Award

This $500 award bursary celebrates the involvement and encouragement provided by the teacher and school in supporting student participation and encouraging excellence in grades 3-6. It is given to the school that receives the most medals (bronze 1 pt, silver 5 pts, gold 8 pts.) and is based on a ratio between school population and medal standings. A minimum 250 student population applies for each school attending the Fair. A school may win the award only once in a three year period. Sponsored by Faculty of Education, University of Windsor.

 

University Of Windsor Faculty Of Nursing Health Sciences Award

This award seeks to acknowledge the best three Novice/Junior, Intermediate and Senior projects which demonstrate experimental research in the field of health. Medals and $50 prize will be presented to the three best Novice/Junior, Intermediate and Senior projects. Sponsored by Faculty of Nursing, University of Windsor.

 

University Of Windsor Faculty Of Science Prize

The University of Windsor Faculty of Science Prize, as judged by a panel of three professors from the Faculty of Science at the University of Windsor, will recognize the best overall senior science project. This prize will contribute $1,500 towards the travel expenses of the winning scientists so that they can attend the Canada Wide Science Fair. In addition, each member of the winning team will receive a Faculty of Science lapel pin, a certificate,. Projects in Life / Behavioural Sciences, Physical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Computer Science and Mathematics and Statistics will be considered for the award. Sponsored by University of Windsor Faculty of Science.

 

University Of Windsor Foundation Award

This award seeks to recognize the top Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior projects in the Engineering, or Automotive division, which demonstrate uniqueness and innovation to design and engineering principles. Winners will receive a $50 prize and medal. Partners must split the prize. Sponsored by Faculty of Engineering, University of Windsor.

 

Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board Prize

This prize will contribute $2,000 towards the travel expenses and cost of sending one of the top science fair project winners from the Catholic School Board to the Canada Wide Science Fair this May. All categories will be considered. Sponsored by Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.

 

Youth Science Ontario - Stepping Stone Award

This prize will contribute towards the travel expenses and cost of sending one of the top science fair project winners to the Canada Wide Science Fair this May. All categories will be considered. Sponsored by YSO.

 

Special Mention:
